Serve Your Community as a Firefighter, EMS Provider, or Support Staff Member
Are you passionate about making a difference in your community? The Sherman Volunteer Fire Department is calling on dedicated individuals to join our team as volunteer firefighters, EMS providers, or support staff members. Located in the heart of Sherman, Connecticut, our department plays a vital role in protecting our small-town community, responding to emergencies, and ensuring the safety of our neighbors. Whether you’re an experienced first responder, someone with no prior training, or someone who prefers to contribute behind the scenes, we welcome individuals who are eager to learn, serve, and contribute to a cause that truly matters. By volunteering with us, you’ll become an essential part of a team that values courage, compassion, and commitment.
At the Sherman Volunteer Fire Department, we provide comprehensive training and certification programs to equip you with the skills needed to respond to fires, medical emergencies, and other critical situations. For those interested in firefighting or EMS, the department will sponsor you to attend Firefighting, EMR, or EMT training. For support staff volunteers, there are countless ways to contribute, from assisting with administrative tasks and fundraising to community outreach and supporting operations during emergencies.
Every calendar year. Fire and EMS members are expected to attend a minimum of 18 drills (Monday nights), 6 monthly meetings (second Thursday of every month), and respond to 20 calls. There are no mandatory on-call hours and members can respond to calls based on their specific availability. Support member requirements are flexible and generally require attending several meetings/events throughout the year.
Sherman is a community that thrives on the dedication of its volunteers, and the Sherman Volunteer Fire Department is at the heart of that spirit. Whether you’re responding to emergencies, helping with community outreach, or ensuring the smooth operation of our department, your contribution will make a lasting impact. Volunteering with us is more than just a role—it’s about being a trusted neighbor, a reliable helper, and a hero to those in need.
