FAQS
If I call 911 and an ambulance comes to my house will I be charged for that service?
If the ambulance provides you with transportation to the hospital then you will be charged. While the SVFD operates a volunteer organization, the costs associated with maintaining the necessary training levels of our members in addition to keeping all of our equipment in proper working order necessitates that we charge for our services. Payment is not collected at the time of service and the SVFD will never deny care based on the abillity of an indivudual to pay. .
If I have brush that I want to burn should I call the fire department?
Any open burning in the town of Sherman requires a burn permit issued from the Fire Marshal. A copy of this permit is provided to the fire department for our awareness. Although it is not necessary to contact the fire department it is a good idea to inform your neighbors that you will be burning so that they do not call 911. If someone calls 911 to report a fire we will still respond to investigate even if you have a burn permit. If at that time we determine that the fire is not being controlled properly we will put it out.
How many pieces of apparatus does the SVFD currently have?
The SVFD currently operates 9 pieces of apparatus. This includes not only traditional fire fighting equipment but also a boat which allows us to respond to emergencies on the lake as well as a John Deere Gator that provides us with access to the many hiking tails around the town of Sherman. See the Apparatus Page for details.
How can I make a donation to the SVFD?
Donations of any amount are always appreciated and can be either sent via mail to:
PO Box 249
Sherman, CT 06784
or, you can feel free to stop by the firehouse on any Monday evening during drill and drop off your donation. We always enjoy meeting residents outside of times of crisis.
